Frequently Asked Questions
Will I feel better after therapy?
The greatest benefit of psychotherapy over other treatment options is that you are an active and vital participant in your own healing process. Because of this, individual factors may impede or accelerate your progress so there is no demonstrable way to guarantee success in therapy for everyone. However, with the right therapist, it is highly possible to experience positive outcomes for lasting change.
How long will therapy take?
Due to individual uniqueness, there is no single answer to this question. The length of therapy depends on many factors including the types of issues you are working on, how long you have been struggling with your problems, the complexity of your situation, and what you are looking to accomplish. Often relatively specific and brief interventions can be helpful and in other cases, months and years of work may need to be invested in an in-depth exploration of your personal conflicts.
How much will it cost?
Therapy could be expensive and prices may range anywhere from £25 to £150 a session with average of £50 to £90 for one to one and £70 to £130 a session for couple and group/family therapies. Most therapists are empathetic to the clients' financial situation and may see some clients on reduced fees. The Practice also runs an affordable therapy clinic headed by the Director of the practice & staffed by qualified therapists as well as supervised associate therapists (trainees) which charges between £25 and £40 a session.
Wouldn't antidepressants or anti-anxiety pills from my GP be sufficient?
Since everyone is different, there is no one correct approach. Psychoactive medications may be helpful and necessary in some cases in providing symptom relief. However, your GP may not have the depth of therapeutic experience that specially trained psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists or psychoanalysts have. In addition, though medication alone may help in the short term, it does very little to address the underlying causes of your problems.
What about confidentiality?
Confidentiality is at the heart of therapy and we will not share your information with third parties. It is important that clients feel free to speak their mind and therapist try to provide this unique space for their clients. All Therapists work independently and manage their own case-loads. In order to protect client confidentiality, The Primrose Hill Practice does not hold any files on clients. You should be aware however; if you have private health insurance, some insurance companies require certain information from the therapist as a condition for payment. If this is a major area of concern, it should be one of the subjects covered when you meet your therapist for the first time so that you are clear about your therapist's policies and procedures regarding confidentiality and what information may be required for the insurance company. You always reserve the right to pay for therapy without insurance.
