Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with Baran
Psychoanalysis is a therapeutic discourse which treats symptoms and suffering through speech. As a psychoanalyst, I am interested in listening to your story, in providing you a space to speak freely, to give voice to your symptoms, gauge new understandings and to dispel some of your myths. I pay close attention to the words you use, not just to what is said, but to that which is omitted or left unsaid. By acknowledging that no one understands you better than yourself and that you have the right to live your own life rather than try to make it fit a specific description or prescription, by prioritising your desire over what I think is good for you, the analytic process opens up a space for your desires to emerge and offers up the possibility for realising a more genuine existence.
Psychoanalysis differs from a number of therapeutic disciplines, such as CBT, in that it endeavours to enable the client (analysand) to realise his/her subjective and unconscious truths. Instead of placing the emphasis on better management of conscious symptoms, psychoanalysis tries to shed light upon unconscious desires and motives, thereby shifting symptoms at the conscious level, not by effective management, but through engagement with the insightful process of analysis. To this extent, my role is not to be the final arbiter of your truths, or a person whose better design for life can be adopted in place of yours, rather, a facilitator, so that you can engage the process of psychoanalysis and find out more about yourself and your relation to others. As Sigmund Freud once put it, 'For when all is said and done, its is impossible to destroy anyone in absentia or effigy".
In order to keep my practice contemporary and relevant, I remain engaged with theoretical challenges and developments within psychoanalysis as well as related fields such as philosophy, feminist theories, politics, linguistics and psychology. My practice style is influenced by Freud's original writings, readings of Lacanian and Linguistic psychoanalysis and contemporary European Schools of thought particularly the French school.
I strongly believe that therapy should be accessible to those who seek it and therefore retain a limited provision for clients on low income.
I work in a non-judgemental way and do not use pathologising language.
I do not discriminate on the basis of Gender, Sexuality, Disability, Age, Race, Class
