Psychotherapy with Hana

I began my career in 1998 working in an RD Laing-inspired residential treatment programme in San Francisco, specialising in trauma, self-harm, psychiatric crisis intervention and addiction counselling.  In 2003, I trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and CBT and began to use Mindfulness meditation and existential philosophy in my work with young people and adults diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and complex mental health conditions.

Since moving to the UK a few years ago from California, I have been Clinical Director of a leading Mind association in East London as well as an Honorary Psychological Therapist at a Personality Disorder and Self Harm Clinic within the NHS.

My approach to psychotherapy is informed by my experiences growing up in various cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, London, Madrid and Oaxaca, Mexico) and my immersion in the arts, philosophies and literatures of Europe, North and South America, and East Asia. I have been influenced by the pluralism and creativity of the psychoanalytic traditions in South America, postmodern critical theory, the latest research in developmental psychology and neuropsychoanalysis and finally by the writings of Andre Green, Julia Kristeva, Judith Butler, Jean Laplanche , Michael Eigen and Adam Phillips, among others.

I believe my eclectic background allows me to establish a strong working alliance with people from all walks of life and makes it possible for me to attune to the particularities and universality of desire, love, pain, suffering, shame, guilt, regret and loneliness as they manifest in family constellations and cultural/socioeconomic contexts. Above all, I am deeply committed to making psychotherapy accessible to people who would never otherwise consider talking therapies.

Areas I work with:
  • creative blocks and inertia
  • trauma
  • self-harm and self-destructive behaviours
  • addiction
  • psychosis
  • mourning and melancholy
  • sexuality and gender identity
  • unbearable emotional states such as anger, rage, emptiness, alienation
  • acute anxiety and stress
  • family and relationship difficulties
  • cultural, linguistic and acculturation issues
  • Specialist areas: young people, borderline personality, severe mental health difficulties, drug and alcohol misuse
